Chilli Spray Is the Answer Not Slut Walk
One ignorant Canadian Policeman when he was asked why his department has not been able to stop offences against women in public places said it was because women are dressing like ‘sluts’ meaning that if they stopped dressing like ‘sluts’ they would be safe. In other words the boorish grunt is blaming good citizens for crimes likely to be committed against them.
Why then do they need a police department and why do they pay men such as these who have already justified crimes against women? Is ‘Slut Walk’ or its Indian variant ‘Besharmi Morcha’ the answer?
Compare this to the Police Officers of Chennai. Often they go to girls’ colleges to explain the working of the Police Department. Invariably the discussion leads to crime against women in the public environment. The Chennai Police Officers, to their credit, are never churlish. Unlike their Canadian counterpart they say openly that it is the right of every woman to dress as she prefers. They emphasise that the Department guarantees that right and will provide due protection to every citizen immaterial of how he or she is dressed. They also say that if any one tries to abridge that right or tries to take advantage of a person because of the way he or she is dressed then the offender would meet the full consequences as per law.
However, they advise women to be cautious. They counsel that women should be prepared to defend themselves under all circumstances. They suggest that women should be familiar with atleast the basics in self defence.
Above all they recommend that it is better for women to always be in possession of self defence ‘spray and escape’ device.
Whether at home or outside ladies, the elderly and such other weaker sections of our societies are always vulnerable to attack. The attacker need not always be a hardened criminal. He could be an otherwise normal person suddenly overcome with lust or greed. He could even be a person intimately known to the victim. All the same the consequences of an attack are usually so dire that one must be prepared to fend off such attack.
